Limbo: The Art of Sound and how it relates to Freud's "Beyond the Pleasure Principle".

The music and sound design of Limbo is very subtle. Throughout the game, there are slight audio queues that hint at what the player is doing.

Audio spectrogram of audio in Limbo:

This audio spectrogram is from the first 1 minute of the game. The spike at 45 seconds in, is the player falling in to the pit of spikes in the beginning.

The sudden, unexpected fear that comes from a combination of falling into a spike pit and the loud impaling sound that comes from it.

"Fright, fear, apprehension are incorrectly used as synonymous expressions: in their relation to danger they admit of quite clear distinction."

(Freud, "Beyond the Pleasure Principle", p. 144).
